Tara Jean Van Niekerk (nee Murphy) - passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on December 9th 2024 at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital in Oakville, Ontario at the age of 52 years.
Daughter of the late Russell and Geraldine Murphy. Beloved mother of Laura Van Niekerk. Former wife to Steven Van Niekerk. Adored partner of Bob Crawford. Treasured member of the Curry, Popple and Finch families. Cherished friend to many. Acceptable and acknowledged human of many cats.
Tara graduated from High School in Oshawa, Ontario. She was also a permanent lifelong resident to Haliburton, Ontario. She was found most summers frolicking in the cool waters of Drag Lake, and winters skiing at Sir Sam’s Ski Hill. Tara’s love of music carried her through her lifetime. In addition to singing in the shower and in-car spontaneous solos, she loved her time as a member of various choirs.
Tara’s adventurous nature led her to travel and move many places. Her travels to Zimbabwe resulted in a 20 year marriage to Steve, and the love of her life, her daughter Laura.
Tara graduated from Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy in 1996. She embarked on a 25 year career as a Registered Massage Therapist primarily in Milton, Ontario. Her healing hands were much appreciated by her clients.
Later, Tara entered the medical field with a new career in the Georgetown Hospital as a clerk. Tara’s medical knowledge was extensive and appreciated by those closest to her.
Tara’s favorite role was being a mom. Laura grew into her best friend and confident. She devoted her life to Laura and her siblings with four legged furry friends. Tara’s love of animals, included close calls with wild lions, as well as rescued domestic stray cats and dogs. Her favorite pastime was protecting snapping turtles while they crossed the precarious roads of Haliburton.
As per Tara's wishes, cremation has taken place.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Jones Funeral Home, 11582 Trafalgar Road, Georgetown on Thursday, December 12th 2024 at 2:00pm with a reception held following the service.
As an expression of sympathy, donations can be made to your local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
