Stanley Ronald Hatcher (1932-2014)
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Stanley Ronald after a courageous battle with cancer. Stan left us, surrounded by his family, on November 30th, in his 83rd year. Beloved husband of Gladys, his sweetheart always and partner for over 59 years. Loving father to Adrian (Rosemary), Kevin (Lee), Michael (Kathy) and David (Sheri) and grandchildren David, Benjamin, Lindsay, Heidi, Stephanie, Christopher, Ryan, Austin, Michael and Allison. He will be sadly missed by sister-in-law Frances and his eight great grandchildren. Stan was educated at Bishop Wordsworth's School in Salisbury England and obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from Birmingham University. In 1954 he immigrated to Canada, obtained his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Toronto in 1958 and joined Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) as a research engineer at the Chalk River Nuclear Laboratories that same year. He spent the next 34 years with AECL, with 19 years at the Whiteshell Nuclear Research Establishment (WNRE) in Pinawa, Manitoba. He became President of AECL Research in 1986 and President and CEO of AECL in 1989. He retired from AECL in 1992 and was for many years a consultant and a Founding Director of Energy Strategists Consultancy Limited in Washington DC. He served as President of the Pacific Nuclear Council in 1994-96 and President of the American Nuclear Society in 1997-98 - one of only two non-Americans ever to hold that office. He was acclaimed internationally for his work in the nuclear field and in 2010 received the prestigious Global Award of the International Nuclear Societies Council. Stan was also a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the American Nuclear Society, the International Nuclear Engineering Academy, the Canadian Nuclear Society, the Chemical Institute of Canada and the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering. He was a Professional Engineer of Ontario and held the Ian McRae Award of the Canadian Nuclear Association. Stan loved to travel and perhaps some of his favourite times were when he, Gladys and Fran set out on journeys together around the world. Stan was also an active member of St. Alban's Anglican Church where he served as warden for several years, was part of the choir and contributed in several other capacities. In 2005 he received the Bishop's Order of Niagara for exceptional service to the Church. But for all his accomplishments family was always the most important thing to Stan. He loved every member of his family - over 30 children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and his fondest times were camping, canoeing, visiting, playing, working and spending time with each of them. A funeral service will be held at St. Alban's Church, 537 Main Street, Glen Williams on Monday December 8th at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to St. Alban's Church.
