Russell Walter Smith

Russell Walter Smith passed away peacefully with family by his side, at Georgetown Hospital, on Thursday, January 22, 2026, in his 82nd year.

Russ was born to William and Hazel Smith and lived a life filled with adventure, good stories, and a strong work ethic from his early years growing up on the Shelburne family farm. Russ shared 20 wonderful years and an impressive travel résumé with his beloved wife Nancy. Together, they shared exploring the world: Australia, China, Europe, Hawaii, South Africa, South America, and countless cruises, they enjoyed site-seeing and meeting new friends.

Russ was a devoted father to Scott Smith and Cynthia Patriquin (James) and a loving stepfather to Gillian Buckley (Adam) and Michael Urbankiewicz (Angela). His pride and joy were his grandchildren Julia, Emily, Sarina, Carter, William, Nate, Elise, and Evie, each of whom knew they were deeply cherished.

Predeceased by his sister, Betty Black, Russ will be fondly remembered for the traditions he built and the laughs he brought with him. His annual father-and-son fishing trips to Nikina with Scott - made memorable by their legendary 16-hour drive - were as much about storytelling, patience, and cold beverages as they were about the fish.

Russ was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #120 and Hillsview Seniors Centre where he enjoyed playing cards. Friendship, laughter, and community were of great value to him. Russ was a great man, well-liked by everyone he met and willing to help anyone in need.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2026, from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion – Branch #120, 127 Mill Street, Georgetown.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the incredible nurses at Georgetown Hospital Palliative Care unit, and to the staff and volunteers at Cancer Assistance of Halton Hills, for their exceptional care and compassion.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Cancer Assistance of Halton Hills (CASHH) in Russ’s honor would be greatly appreciated.
