Richard Fogal

March 18, 1950 — April 30, 2025

Fogal, Charles Richard (Rick) passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 30, 2025 at Mountainview Residence, surrounded by his wife, children and caring staff. Rick, beloved husband of Jane. Loving father of Erik and Elizabeth (Zach). Dear brother to Robert (Zollie) and Ronald. Rick was predeceased by his parents, Charlie and Berniece Fogal.

Rick had a 35 year career as an Air Canada pilot, retiring as a Captain on the Boeing 767 in 2009. He took great pride in his career and approached it with professionalism and gratitude for the life it afforded him. He fully took advantage of his European layovers to explore the countries he was visiting, always offering his flight crew to join him. To the delight of his children, Rick often brought home special treats for his family.

He was a great listener who happily drew on his own life experiences to help others. He generously donated his time volunteering at a number of different organizations. While still working at Air Canada, he volunteered for the Pilot Assistance program. Once retired, he volunteered at the Halton Hills Distress Centre and later for the Out of the Cold program at Knox Presbyterian Church, where he often took the hard-to-fill overnight shifts as he had so much experience staying awake at odd hours when he was a pilot.

Rick cared deeply for his friends and family, was carefree and goofy, and was blessed with the gift of gab. He loved floating in lakes and oceans, camping with Jane, traveling with friends, and spending time with his children. Being surrounded by nature brought peace to his life and he would often find himself sitting at home watching the birds flutter about looking for food at the many feeders Jane installed around the property.

His brain cancer diagnosis was unexpected and devastating, but he took it in stride, staying positive and hopeful as he underwent surgery and treatment. He leaned into teachings from his life, such as “let go and let God”, the power of positive thinking, and accepting what was happening. His acceptance and demeanour made it much easier for family and friends who surrounded him with love and hope, and who witnessed his eventual decline.

The family is grateful for the incredible care and support Rick received from the staff at Trillium Hospitals, Halton Health Care, Mountainview Residence and Acclaim Health.
