It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of Greta Upper on April 1, 2026 in her 98th year in Georgetown. She leaves her daughters Marcia (Gary) and Alison, grandchildren Sarah (Kyle) and Darren (Kim). She was predeceased by her loving husband Ken of 71 years and her son Lloyd.

Greta was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands on August 29, 1928. She grew up in Amsterdam, living through the Second World War. While visiting her sister Anne, a war bride in St. Catharines, Greta met Ken while working at the Bank of Nova Scotia and married him on June 14, 1952 at Trinity United Church in Thorold. Later in life she became a school secretary and worked for many years at Lord Elgin Vocational School in Niagara Falls until her retirement. She loved this opportunity to meet new people and interact with youth.

Greta and Ken traveled to various parts of the world, taking family car trips to Washington and Florida, and later explore further destinations in other parts of Canada, Alaska, Holland, Spain, Italy, Greece and Hawaii. In retirement, they enjoyed many winters in Florida, creating new friendships over shuffleboard and many card games.

Greta was an expert craftsperson. She was skilled at sewing, crocheting, knitting, weaving, even furniture refinishing. Her projects were completed with precision and care, and she lovingly shared her gifts with family and friends, and any new babies that came along.

It was at the family cottage on Christian Island that both Greta and Ken loved to spend their summers. For over 55 years, Greta loved to walk the beach, boating and sailing with Ken and developed many lasting friendships with the Big Sand Bay cottagers and Band members. Those who walked the beach often ended up sitting on the bench with Greta, where she connected with old friends and continued to make many new friends of all ages.

The family offers their heartfelt thanks and gratitude for the expert care and loving kindness provided by the Georgetown Amica staff and Dr. Bartlett, ensuring Greta’s comfort and providing quality health care for her.
