Kenneth Milton Upper - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of Ken on August 24, 2023 in his 94th year in Georgetown. He leaves his loving wife Greta, married for 71 years, daughters Marcia (Gary) and Alison, grandchildren Sarah (Kyle) and Darren (Kim), predeceased by his son Lloyd.
Ken was born June 8, 1930 in Thorold, Ontario and lived most of his life in the Niagara Region. As an only child, he worked with his father on the family farm. It was during his work at the Bank of Nova Scotia as a young man that he met Greta, wooing her to keep her from returning home to Holland. They married on June 14, 1952 at Trinity United Church in Thorold. Ken retired from BF Goodrich after many years of employment, working shift work in the plant and later as a lab technician.
In his long full life, Ken pursued many loves and passions. The family would take car trips to Washington and Florida, and later he and Greta would explore further destinations in Holland, Spain, Italy, Greece and Hawaii. In retirement, they enjoyed many winters in Florida, creating new friendships over shuffleboard and many card games.
Ken was an expert craftsman, building his family home, his cottage and his daughter Marcia’s cottage on Christian Island. He built a sailboat, and restored an antique Piper PA12 that he greatly enjoyed flying. He continued to fly for many years to various Ontario and US destinations in his next plane - a Cessna 172.
But it was at his cottage on Christian Island that Ken loved to spend his time. For over 55 summers, he enjoyed walking the beach, swimming, exploring Georgian Bay by motor boat, sailboat or plane. Not to mention, for many years quietly dominating the Hobie Cat Regatta with his first mate Darren. Ken was part of the close-knit Big Sand Bay community.
The family offers their heartfelt thanks and gratitude for the expert care and loving kindness provided by the Amica staff, Paramed staff and Dr. Bartlett to both Ken and Greta, ensuring their comfort and providing quality health care.
