Jean Mabel Dunlop
1926 - 2014
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mom and Grandma, Jean Mabel Dunlop (nee Laidlaw) on December 6, 2014. Jean passed away peacefully at the Bennett Centre in Georgetown, having spent the last three years there after six years at home following her stroke in December 2005.
Jean was predeceased by her loving husband of 45 years, John Dunlop (1992), her parents Norman and Katherine Laidlaw, her brother Bill Laidlaw and her sister-in-law Helen Johnson (nee Dunlop). Devoted mother of David Dunlop (Sherry), Barry Dunlop (Sharon) and Helen McCormack (Ken). Cherished grandma of Aaron, Shaun (Christine) and Ashleigh, Stacey (Chris) and Leslie (Kevin), Stephanie, Alanna and Sarah. Beloved sister of Gordon Laidlaw (Rosie) and sister-in-law of Gwen Laidlaw (Bill).
Born in Brampton on May 19, 1926 and raised on the family farm on Heritage Road, Jean met and married the love of her life, John Dunlop, in Norval. Through the unique closeness of the rural farming community, John and Jean enjoyed a special life in Norval, maintaining close relationships with her many cousins, their neighbours and friends at Norval United Church. Although they moved away from Norval after their marriage they returned in 1964 and settled there permanently.
After graduating from Toronto Normal School, Jean had a rewarding career as a teacher specializing in remedial education. She taught at numerous schools and touched the lives of many students with her special gifts. After retirement, Jean remained friends with many of her colleagues and enjoyed her participation in the activities of the Retired Teachers Association.
Jean's selfless, generous, compassionate and caring nature, as well as her passionate love of her family, were well known to all that knew her. Many will remember cherished times spent with Jean at her beloved family cottage, at Church and at the Laidlaw Christmases and picnics. Jean will be sadly missed by her family, nieces and nephews, her cousins and their children, neighbours, colleagues and many lifelong friends.
Visitation will be held at J.S. Jones and Son Funeral Home on Monday,
December 8, 2014 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm with the funeral service in the chapel on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Norval United Church Memorial Fund or the Georgetown Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.
