Janet Burland

d. January 13, 2026

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Janet Marie Burland on January 13, 2026, at Extendicare in Georgetown, Ontario, just 15 days before her 84th birthday.

Janet was born on January 28, 1942, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She will be deeply missed by her loving husband, Norm Burland; her son Doug (Jennifer); her daughter Krista (Brad); and her cherished grandchildren June, Ben, Stephanie, and Katie. She was predeceased by her beloved son Greg.

Janet was also a devoted stepmother to Cathy (Jason) and their children Jordan, Avery, and Leah; Andrew (Jennifer) and their children Ashley and Harrison; and Jennifer (Matthew ) and their children Eva and Noah. She is survived by her sister Audrey, as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents Roy and Nelly, and her brothers Edward “Ed” and James “Jim.”

Family was Janet’s pride and joy and the most important part of her life. She was immensely proud of each and every one of her family members and never missed an opportunity to speak about their accomplishments.

Janet loved to travel and explore the world with her devoted husband Norm. Some of their favourite trips included England, Scotland, Ireland, Alaska, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, and Florida.

Her grandchildren held a special place in her heart. She adored spending time with them—attending sporting events, baking, shopping, and playing games. Her love for them knew no bounds.

You could often find Janet in the kitchen baking her famous apple pie, banana bread, butterscotch brownies, and shortbread cookies, treats that will forever be remembered and missed.

In her early years, Janet worked as a hairdresser, cutting the hair of many family members. She later found success in retail, where she owned her own clothing store.

Janet had a lifelong love of the water, whether swimming in lakes during her childhood or later in pools. She was a swimming instructor, competed in numerous events, enjoyed water skiing, and even participated in water-skiing pyramids. In her younger years, she was crowned Miss Bluenose.

Janet leaves behind a legacy of strong family bonds, unconditional love, and unwavering devotion to those she held dear. She will be remembered for her warm heart, patience, kindness, and above all, her deep love for her family.

She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

In honour of Janet, memorial donations may be made to Parkinson Canada.
