Handy, Jack George Sherman - Peacefully, in the presence of his family, on January 16, 2025 , at the Georgetown Hospital in his 88th year. Husband of the late Mary Handy. Loving father of Mark and his wife Fiona. Jack was predeceased by his parents Edith and Sherman Handy and by his sister Joan Hillhouse. He was also predeceased by Mary's siblings: Betty, Ethel, Robert, Ron, Lois, Marvyn, David, Marlene and Ross. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Marion. Jack will be fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews.
Jack was born and raised in Georgetown. His father built the home that he grew up in and it's still standing to this day on River Drive. Jack loved Georgetown and he often told stories about different people, businesses and landmarks from his younger years.
Jack worked at Farnell's Grocers, Silver's Clothing, both in downtown Georgetown. Later, he worked at Trans-Canada Airlines, which became Air Canada. Then he worked at Nortel from 1965 until his retirement in 1994.
Jack loved animals, especially his feline grandson, Jimmi, and his canine neighbour, Ruby, who used to come over for visits on a regular basis.
Jack had a great sense of humour even in his final hours in the hospital. He was very personable, striking up conversations with anyone. He would always run into people he knew wherever he went. Many times he would be eating at a local diner and someone would anonymously pay for his meal.
Jack enjoyed sports of all kinds, especially hockey and baseball. He was involved in local sports from a young age, both playing and coaching. His proudest moments were with the Georgetown Royalettes and the Georgetown Raiders. He loved watching the Blue Jays and the Maple Leafs and if they were playing at the same time he would constantly change channels between the two games. Jack often said he hoped he would live long enough to see the Maple Leafs win the Stanley Cup again.
A private family graveside service will take place at Hillcrest Cemetery in Norval. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Cancer Assistance Halton Hills (CASHH) or the Upper Credit Humane Society would be appreciated.
