McCaughtry Edward “Ted”
Passed peacefully on June 4th, 2024 in his home at the age of 88 years. Beloved husband of Eleanor, they shared 59 years of marriage. Loving father of Glen Edward (Shelley), Janeen and Alan (Monica). Grandfather of Mitchell (Serena), Skyler, Gavin, Lena, Liam and Aidan. Great-grandfather of Faith. Dear brother of Isobel, the late Margaret (Charlie) and the late Herbert. Ted will be missed by all his nieces and nephews.
Ted lived life with passion, he was a fighter and he lived life his way. Ted brought that intensity to everything he did, especially his love for others. He was a man who loved deeply, he had a good sense of humor and always took good care of the people he loved. Ted never had a bad word to say about anyone and was the first one to stand up for others.
Ted grew up in Northern Ireland, which is where he met his beloved wife, Eleanor. Eleanor was travelling from Canada with her sister-in-law and met her brother. Eleanor remembers seeing a photo of Ted and joking with her sister-in-law about how funny it would be if she married him, a brother and sister marrying a brother and sister. Then Eleanor and Ted met, and he fell in love at first sight. Ted always said he wouldn’t let Eleanor slip through his fingers and only months after meeting, he moved to Canada to be with her.
Upon his move to Canada in 1965, Ted began his career as a TTC operator - for 30 years, Ted was a beloved streetcar and bus operator. He became a life-long fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, though he remained equally passionate about the Manchester United Football Club.
Ted also brought his passion to gardening and lawncare, his lawn was always the envy of the neighbourhood. Ted was generous with his time and helped his neighbours by mowing their lawns and shoveling their driveways. Though he never could be convinced to give out his lawncare secrets, he was always ready to help those in his life. His daughter-in-law Monica remembers the good care Ted gave her when she was pregnant. He would drop everything and pick her up, driving her home to have some food and rest. That was just the kind of man Ted was.
Even in his later years, Ted was a force to be reckoned with. At his grandson Mitchell’s wedding, despite being exhausted, he insisted on grabbing the microphone and singing an old Irish lullaby. Ted even gave an encore of “How Now Brown Cow” much to the delight of his family and once he finished singing there wasn’t a dry eye to be found.
These cherished memories of Ted will be forever remembered, and he will forever be missed by those still here on earth. As a man of faith, we know Ted is now with his Lord and is at peace, waiting to be reunited with all those he loved.
