Suddenly and peacefully on July 27, 2025. Loving mother to her four children, Lisa, Alison, and Jennifer McMurray, and Michael Latreille; doting grandmother to thirteen and thrilled to be a great-grandmother to eight, and counting. Beloved daughter to William and Diana Miller (nee Watt) who hailed from Wick, Scotland, Mum started out her life in Edinburgh, where her roots and heart remained. She was the darling and precocious little sister to four older brothers, pre-deceased by James and Stuart, and survived by Frazer and Hugh, her twin with whom she shared a deep and everlasting bond. Diana will also be sorely missed by many others, including her dear, lifelong friend from Scotland, Angela Shields.
Family was the centre of her heart, and her home was the centre of her family.
Mum/Nan/Nanny enjoyed spending time “puttering around” in her garden, growing tomatoes and arranging her planters so they were suited to her liking, which may or may not have changed to a new spot the next day. She was a fantastic cook and was well known for her traditional roast beef dinners with her epic Yorkshire puddings that were beyond compare. Her evening tea was often accompanied with a sweet treat, which if you were lucky was her famous banana cake.
Arriving in Toronto in 1963 as a teenager, Diana quickly became a staple in the hip Yorkville culture of the 1960’s where she honed her dancing skills. She loved to dance as a teenager and her love for dancing continued into the disco era and beyond, as she taught her moves to family and friends, which are still used to this day.
Always resilient, Diana was the matriarch of her family and raised her kids on her own. She studied at Skerry’s Business College in Scotland, where she excelled at typing and shorthand to pursue secretarial work. After working for many years as a secretary, Diana started her own business that she proudly ran for over 20 years, until her passing.
Christmas was magical at Mum’s with her home decorated to delight and welcome family and friends. A blanket of snow outside and the warm glow of lights inside would greet everyone who stopped in for a visit. Of course, an appetizer spread, pyjamas for everyone and orange chocolate were staple items.
Mum liked to be busy and remained active with newfound friends as she participated in some of her favourite pastimes: bingo and lawn bowling. She particularly liked winning! She also valued the friendship and laughs during these times at the Acton Community Centre. Diana was known for her jovial laugh and her welcoming presence. She was a social butterfly who appreciated fine British humour. Laughter and camaraderie would prevail as family and friends would gather at Mum’s house for frequent drop-ins or get-togethers, where puzzles and boardgames were part of the tradition. Of course, Diana’s competitive nature would play out here too. Always up for adventure, Mum would spend summers camping or at the beach, well into her 50’s. Mum’s tan could not be surpassed by anyone.
What a hoot! Mum would later recall that as a mischievous child she would get her classmates to giggle when she would used black gum to cover her teeth and covertly smile towards them during a lecture. Her childhood cat, whom she called “Puddy-poo,” would wait for her at her bus-stop after school and they would walk home together. She will be sadly missed by her current fur babies who kept her moving every day. No matter the weather, she would be out throwing the ball in two feet of snow or the sweltering heat. Not to worry, as her family will step in to keep this tradition alive, as Mum would have wanted.
With love in our hearts, we are committed to continuing on with Mum’s legacy of family traditions and strong family bonds.
Family and friends will be received at Jones Funeral Home, 11582 Trafalgar Rd, Georgetown on Friday, August 1, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00AM. A Celebration of Life for Diana will follow in the chapel at 11:00 AM. Reception at the family home.
