Cornelia "Lia" Meyer

d. December 30, 2025

It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Cornelia (Lia) Alida Meyer (nee Res) on Tuesday, December 30th, 2025 in Georgetown Hospital. She was 94 years old.

Lia, also known as Oma, Tante Lia and Oma-Oma was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands on July 16, 1931 into a large and loving Dutch family all involved in the bakery business. She was the first of many cousins on her mother and father’s side. Her siblings were her best friends. Lia married John Francis Meyer and emigrated to Canada, a land of opportunity and wide-open spaces. Together they worked, travelled extensively, had many adventures and raised three daughters: Alice, Nancy and Linda. Lia and John lived in various southern Ontario towns including London, Malton, Halton Hills and finally Georgetown. Lia and John had a wonderful community of Dutch and non-Dutch friends with whom they bowled, played cards, enjoyed house parties and morning coffee get togethers. Lia moved into Mountainview Terrace in October 2024 and enjoyed rekindling old friendships and making many new friends. Lia actively participated in Mountainview’s social activities such as the Georgetown Santa Parade, Halloween Costume Days, Ugly Christmas Sweater Days, and PJ Days. As well, Bingo and the Icecream Socials were a favourite weekly event. Lia was cognitively strong right to the end, often making us laugh with her quick wit. In recent years she loved telling stories about the past, chatting with friends and family, looking at photos on her iPad and spending time with her great-grandchildren. The babies made her feel young again.

Lia is survived by her daughters Alice (Derek) and Linda (Merv), her grandchildren: Michelle, Mark, Andrew, Leah-Marie, Sara and her great-grandchildren: Morgan, Victoria, Jeffrey and Jude all of whom she was so proud of. Lia also adored her many nieces and nephews in The Netherlands with whom she Facetimed regularly. Yes, Lia was tech savvy – her iPad was in use every day. Lia is predeceased by her husband of 63 years, John; her daughter, Nancy; and her siblings Jan, Ada and Marianne. Lia will be greatly missed.

A Celebration of Life for both Lia and John will be held at Jones Funeral Home in the Spring. Date to be announced. At that time in lieu of flowers Lia would have encouraged you to buy yourself a bouquet of tulips, her favourite flower. Please share your stories, memories and photos on the Jones Funeral Home site. Thank you.
