Clare Hughes

Hughes, Clare. After a long and very difficult illness, Clare left us on Saturday, January 14, 2023. Clare, who was mother to Kevin and Elaine (John) and grandmother (aka Emma) to Brett and Nolan Hodgson was a saint of a woman.

Clare was born in Montreal to parents William and Cecile. She was schooled by catholic nuns and upon graduation from high school, began work at the CN. While working there she met the love of her life, George. They were married and spent 58 years together before George passed in 2018. While living in Montreal, Kevin and Elaine were born and the family grew.

Clare and George came to Georgetown in 1968 and it was there that they would reside for the rest of their lives. Mom and dad lived on Jessop Court during a time when your neighbours became close friends. Mom and dad treasured their friendships with the Ferris family, the Andersons, the Whittikers, Kohlners and the Burroughs family to name a few. The friendships forged on Jessop Court remain to this day.

Clare worked at Harkema Express Lines in Brampton for several years before getting a job at William Neilsons in Georgetown in 1982. She worked at Neilsons for 24 years before retiring there in 2006. It was at Neilson's that mom made many friends. Upon her retirement a special dinner was held in her honour at which well over 100 people attended. She was loved by her coworkers!

Shortly after they arrived in Georgetown, Clare and George joined North Halton Golf Course. They made many lifelong friends while playing golf at North Halton. Mom loved playing golf, but she wasn't very good at it, much to her consternation. She hated being embarrassed in front of others.

What Clare will most be remembered for is her devotion to her family. She spent many hours over the past 20 years watching her grandsons play hockey all over Ontario and was their biggest fan. She showed Kevin and Elaine her unconditional love in the way she supported all of our endeavours. She always believed in us and did everything she could to help us succeed and be happy. We will never be able to repay her for the love she gave us every day. She was Elaine's best friend. She was Kevin's hero. We miss her terribly. Our hearts are broken.

Friends are welcomed to celebrate Clare's life on Friday, January 20, 2023 at Jones Funeral Home, 11582 Trafalgar Road, in the Trafalgar Room from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. In memory contributions to the Alzheimer's Society are greatly appreciated.
