It is with heavy hearts that the family of Charles Victor Coomber announces his passing on March 24, 2021 at Georgetown Hospital in his 94th year. Charles was preceded in death by his beloved wife Sylvia in 2004, and his sister Margaret of Kent, England.
He is the loving father of Susan, father-in-law of Mark, and the cherished and proud Grandad of Amanda and Jeffrey. Fond Uncle Charlie to the Birch and King families in Kent England and the Mercer, Webster, Maneely families here in Canada along with many others. Best Buddy to our dog Sylvie (aka Convict 99).
Charles was born in Strood, Kent England on June 22, 1927 to the elder Charles and Daisy Coomber. As a young man, he lived through the Second World War and the evacuation of school-children during the Battle of Britain. From 1946 to 1948, Charles served in the British Royal Air Force on assignment in Egypt and Palestine. Upon his return to England, he promptly married his long-time sweetheart Sylvia on March 18, 1950. After the tragic death of a stillborn baby girl and struggles in the search for employment, he and Sylvia decided to immigrate to Canada in 1957, living in Toronto for some time before finally settling in Georgetown, where he found work in the automotive industry and crafted a successful career as an accountant and eventual general manager at many car dealerships in Southern Ontario. He would live in the Halton Hills area for the remainder of his life, firstly living on Stevens Crescent after welcoming the joyful birth of his healthy daughter Susan in 1961 then moving to a country property on Winston Churchill above Norval in 1968.
Charles enjoyed the peaceful nature of living in Norval. It was there that he was in his element, tending to his personal vegetable garden, picking fruit, and feeding the birds every morning. He lived there until 2015 when he moved to the Mountainview Residence and Terrace. In his final years at Mountainview, he made numerous new friends and enjoyed solving the Sudoku and crossword puzzles they brought him. He really did appreciate the community he had found there in the last few years of his life.
Charles had been an avid soccer or "football" fan ever since he was a boy. He volunteered with the Georgetown Soccer Club as a coach and referee many times over the years. He also regularly followed the Gillingham Football Club and Tottenham Hot Spurs, two of his favourite UK teams.
Additionally, Charles was an avid reader. He enjoyed reading many mystery novels and historical books that reminded him of life in England. He also loved to take his grandchildren on visits to the Georgetown Public Library and to volunteer late in life in the book section at the Wastewise Community Resource Centre in Georgetown.
Charles enjoyed many summers renting cottages in Sauble Beach until a pool was built on the property. He traveled to Vancouver, Barbados, Indian Shores Florida and spent wedding anniversary trips with Sylvia in St Lucia and Maui. Charles also returned to England for family visits a few times over the years.
As many who know him may attest, Charles seemed to always have a rhyme to recite or a song to sing. He was a member of the St Paul's Anglican Church choir in Norval and he enjoyed listening to many CD's like Tony Bennett and the soundtracks to his favourite musical films. He enjoyed watching many movies, collecting stamps and coins, and watching or attending, if he could, the horse races at Woodbine Race Track.
Charles greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren. From taking them to school in the mornings when they were young, outings to Chapters bookstore and lunch at Zellers. He was very proud of their accomplishments such as his granddaughter securing a position at the local library and participating in Special Olympics and his grandson attending Queens University and graduating with honors in Concurrent Education to become a teacher. Charles valued all of his friendships with great care and he loved to make people smile through a song and dance. Kind, caring, and full of life, your voice will be forever missed.
Go for Gold as Charlie would say. Forever in our hearts Mr. Sunshine.
Thank you to all the staff at Mountainview for your kind care and for making Dad feel at home and loved. Thank you to the paramedics, nurses and doctors at Georgetown Hospital for Dad's care in his final days.
