Catherine “Cathy” Mary Rankin (née Stokes) – Passed away peacefully on March 14, 2026, in Georgetown, Ontario, at the age of 88.
Beloved wife of the late John Rankin, whom she married in 1959. Proud and devoted mother of Suzanne (David) and Tim (Lesley), and an exceptionally proud grandmother of Christopher, Alexandra, Sonja, and Emma.
Born on June 4, 1937, in Wrexham, Wales, Cathy came to Canada with her family as a young girl, settling in Pointe-Claire, Quebec. Though she built her life in Canada, she always kept fond connections with cousins in Wales and a lasting appreciation for her Welsh roots.
Cathy was an avid volunteer throughout her life and rarely sat still for long. In every community she lived in, she found a way to contribute—most often as a museum docent or library volunteer. She loved sharing knowledge and stories, and if there was an opportunity to guide, teach, or explain something interesting, Cathy was usually first in line.
She was a lifelong reader and made sure her children became readers too. Many trips to the library ended with Cathy arriving home with armfuls of books for Sue and Tim, unknowingly starting a habit that would stay with them for life.
Cathy loved gardening, adored cats, and enjoyed lively conversation. Her well-known feline companion, Heidi, was a regular topic of conversation and a beloved fixture in her life—so much so that Heidi has managed to outlive her, which Cathy likely would have found both amusing and entirely appropriate for a cat.
She never hesitated to share her opinions and welcomed a good intellectual challenge. Her faith was also an important part of her life, and although she wasn’t one to make a show of it, her connection to the Anglican Church in Georgetown remained meaningful to her.
Her greatest joy, however, was her grandchildren. Cathy adored Christopher, Alie, Sonja, and Emma and spoke about them constantly to friends and fellow residents at Amica Georgetown. Anyone who spent more than a few minutes with her likely heard at least one proud update about what they were doing.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Cathy’s life will be held at the Jones Funeral Home, 11582 Trafalgar Road, Georgetown on March 29, 2026 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Georgetown Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.
Cathy will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her. And if there happens to be a library wherever she’s headed next, we’re fairly certain she’s already asking where the good books are kept.
