Betty Mackenzie

November 7, 1938 — May 7, 2025

Mary Elizabeth ‘Betty” Mackenzie (nee Greig)  1938 - 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Betty Mackenzie on Wednesday May 7, 2025, at Mountainview Residence, Georgetown in her 87th year.

Loving mother of Greg (Heather) and Andrew (Trisha). Loved grandma of Alex, Eric, Brendan, Ben, Sam and Kylie. Dear sister of Mabel Devolin (the late Bob) and the late Harry and Gordon Greig. Betty will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by Sandy Mackenzie, Marna Brearley, David (Anne) Mackenzie and many nieces and nephews.

Betty was born in Cooksville, now part of Mississauga, and grew up on a farm that raised both crops and animals. When Betty reached high school age, the family moved to Georgetown to a farm on Trafalgar Road. After excelling in high school, she went to Toronto Western Hospital to become a nurse, graduating in 1959.

After graduation she and a friend travelled for several months through Europe, at times boldly hitch-hiking their way around. When she returned, she worked as a nurse before heading to the University of Western Ontario to get her Bachelor of Nursing degree.

Family life took over from there with Betty staying home to care for Greg and Andrew for many years. She then returned to nursing, working for Peel and Halton Health Units and finally the North Halton Mental Health unit as a psychiatric nurse before retiring in 1998.  In retirement Betty pursued her love of travel. Australia, New Zealand and China being among the many destinations. She was also a near-fanatical bridge player, enjoying many bridge clubs and groups over the years.

Forever a supportive mother and grandmother she will be dearly missed.

Family and friends will be received at the Jones Funeral Home, 11582 Trafalgar Road, Georgetown (905) 877-3631 on Saturday May 24, 2025 from 3-5 p.m.

Memorial contributions to the Georgetown Hospital Foundation or Cancer Assistance Services of Halton Hills would be appreciated.
