With great sadness, the family of Bernard A. (Bernie) Poirier announces his passing on the evening of Thursday, March 18, 2021 after a brief battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). A loving husband and father with a kind heart and infectious sense of humor, Bernie will be forever remembered by his wife Jackie, his children Nick (Lynn), Andrew (Melanie) and Stephanie (Donnie) and his grandchildren Mateo, Carter, Mila, Isla and Alice. Dear brother to Lise Poirier, brother-in-law of Christine (Simon) O'Neill, uncle to Matthew, Meghan, Katie, Emma, and cousin (little brother) to Robert (Elizabeth) Poirier.
Born in Montreal, Quebec in 1960, Bernie & Jackie moved to Georgetown, Ontario in 1983 where they would raise their three children and forge many long-lasting relationships and deep family friendships. Bernie was a deeply altruistic and generous man and was always there to step in and lend a helping hand to his family, friends and neighbours at every opportunity. He spent countless hours applying his vast technical and construction knowledge to helping friends and family with odd jobs and home renovations, and was the first out the door with the snow blower at every snowfall to keep his neighbour's driveways and sidewalks clear.
Bernie grew up in the construction industry - having first worked for his mother's general contracting company - and spent almost 35 years working for EFCO, a manufacturer of concrete forms. A consummate professional, Bernie thrived on building relationships with people from across the industry and lived for complex and challenging projects that he would enthusiastically tackle with his skill experience and ingenuity.
While Bernie's passing is a shock to us all, he will always be remembered as a devoted husband, a caring father and a true friend to many. We encourage all who knew him to reflect on the stories and memories they have of Bernie and celebrate a life that was filled with laughter and love.
We would like to thank the support and compassion shown to Bernie and our family, by Doctors and Nurses at Juravinski Hospital ICU, the team at the ALS Clinic at McMaster University Medical Centre, and especially to Dr. Paul Zeni, whose friendship and guidance helped our family tremendously through these challenging few months.
A visitation will be held at the Jones Funeral Home, 11582 Trafalgar Road, Georgetown on Friday from 6-8 p.m. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, guests wishing to attend the visitation will need to book in advance by calling (905) 877-3631. A private family memorial service, by invitation only, will be held in the chapel on Saturday March 27, 2021 at 11 a.m. Family and friends are invited to view a live webcast of Bernie's memorial service on the Jones Funeral Home website beginning at 10:45 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the ALS Society of Canada at www.als.ca.
