Berend "Bernie" Bergsma

After several years of battling Parkinsons Disease, the Lord took home to himself, our dear husband, father and grandfather.

Berend “Bernie” Bergsma passed away on Sunday, November 18, 2023 at Muskoka Shores Nursing Home in Gravenhurst, Ontario. Bernie was born on September 24, 1942 in Oldeboorn, Friesland, The Netherlands to Jan and Tryntje (nee) Knijpstra. His parents immigrated to British Columbia in 1952 when Bernie was only 9 years old with 4 other siblings. Jim (deceased) Jenny, Esther, and Margaret (deceased). In 1963 Bernie decided to go on a holiday to Ontario and visited many of his relatives in Georgetown where he met his wife, Margaret. They married in 1965 at the Georgetown Christian Reformed Church. They had 4 children Laura, Johnny (deceased), Edward and James.

At age 60 he became a very proud grandfather “Pake” to his grandchildren Brooke and Tyler. Bernie praised the Lord by singing in the Correlators Male Choir for many years. After his retirement he enjoyed winters in Florida with his wife of 58 years. There he sang in a church choir and was involved in several plays. In 2017 Bernie and his wife moved to Gravenhurst to be closer to their cottage where they enjoyed their summers.

He was thankful to the Lord for each day given.
