Obituary

With heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of Anna Kirec, who died peacefully in her 94th year on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at Groves Memorial Hospital.

Anna was predeceased by her beloved husband John in 2006, her partner of 56 years. Together, they shared a remarkable journey shaped by courage, sacrifice, and devotion to family. Fleeing the former Yugoslavia with their young son, carrying with her strength, resilience, and the traditions that would remain at the heart of her life in Canada.

Proud of her Hungarian heritage, Anna built a home where culture, language, and community flourished. She was a devoted mother to John (Irene) and Tibor (Veronica), and a cherished grandmother to Sandra (Michael), Christopher (Lisa), Stephanie (Andy), and Steven. She was a loving Great-Granny to Anthony, Nicholas, Hannah, and Benjamin, and joyfully anticipated the arrival of twins in the coming weeks.

Anna will be missed by her sisters Irena Toth and Elizabeth Buglya, and was predeceased by her siblings Margaret and Stephen. Her memory will live on in the hearts of extended family and friends both in Canada and abroad.

Anna’s life was rooted in the values of hard work, independence, and generosity. She expressed her love through food, tradition, and hospitality. She was known for her baking and cooking, especially the making of homemade bread in her kemence, the traditional outdoor brick oven that connected her to her homeland. At the Irish Lake community, where 21 Hungarian-Slovenian families shared cottages, Anna’s table was always open. Her meals were more than food—they were a celebration of heritage, friendship, and belonging.

She found joy in tending her garden, preserving family recipes, and sharing stories and laughter over a simple glass of red wine at the cottage. Anna cherished the rhythms of life—faith, family gatherings, and the comfort of familiar traditions passed down through generations.

Above all, Anna loved her family deeply and lived her life with quiet strength, dignity, and warmth. She will be remembered for her generous spirit, her unwavering resilience, and her deep appreciation for life’s simple and meaningful moments.

Visitation will be held on Monday, April 27, 2026, at Jones Funeral Home, 11582 Trafalgar Road, Georgetown, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will follow in the Chapel at 1:00 p.m., with fellowship in the Trafalgar Room afterward. Those unable to attend may livestream the service below.

Her legacy lives on in the traditions she preserved, the family she nurtured, and the love she gave so freely.
