It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend Anđelko (Đelan) Boras on May 21st, 2025 at the age of 91. Anđelko passed away peacefully at St. Joseph Health Centre in Guelph after a long-fought battle with dementia.
Anđelko was an honest and hard-working man who loved to work on machinery or anything that was hands-on. Anđelko was a proud Croatian whose deep faith in the Roman Catholic Church was a guiding force throughout his life. As one of the founding members of the Croatian Cultural Centre, Kraljica Mira, in Norval, Anđelko dedicated much of his free time to service and volunteer work, where he found both a sense of community and purpose. He loved to play bocce with his late brother +Ante and his many friends.
Anđelko was born on January 23rd, 1934, in Brljica, Vitina, Ljubuški. As the eldest son in his family, he carried a strong sense of responsibility from a young age. He left his hometown to attend trade school in Sarajevo, where he went on to become one of the city’s first crane operators—a role he took great pride in. He met the love of his life, Antonija and together they began a new chapter, building their life and future in the city where Antonija worked as a nurse. Anđelko was a loving husband to Antonija for 62 years. They started their life in Sarajevo where their two sons Mate and Mario were born. They came to Alberta, Canada on May 1st, 1970 following the advice of Anđelko’s beloved Striko, whose name he proudly carried. After being warmly welcomed by his generous Boras family, Anđelko and his family were taken in by his uncle and wife, who had six children and ran a large farm and ranch in Coaldale, Alberta. Anđelko would always joke, “This farm is too big.….it is bigger than Ljubuški.” Grateful for their support in helping him start a new life in Canada, Anđelko eventually decided he was better suited for city life. He moved his family to Toronto but always remained deeply appreciative of his uncle and cousins for their kindness and generosity during those early years. Anđelko’s relatives in Toronto, Vice and Iva Boras took his family in until they got on their feet. Anđelko’s brother Ante joined them shortly after. Anđelko became a proud father-in-law when his sons Mate (Spomenka) and Mario (Tanja) got married. He was a proud Dedo who cherished his grandchildren Dora, Michael, Matthew and Marko.
Cherished brother of Ivan (+Dragica), and Nevenka Majic (+Mile), the late +Ljilja, the late +Anica, the late +Ante (Anđa) and the late +Jagoda Boras (+Mate). He will also be sadly missed by many cousins, nephews and nieces here in Canada, the US (Cleveland), Croatia and Hercegovina. Anđelko will be sadly missed by numerous friends and all those whose lives he touched.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Croatian Norval Building Fund.
